The Gateway to the Highlands, Inverness is
a city that caters for everyone. With a great range of shops and
restaurants for those that need the modern conveniences and easy access
to the hills and glens of the Highlands for those that want to enjoy the
great outdoors, Inverness is both the cultural centre of the north and
the ideal base for adventure seekers with easy access to Loch Ness and
the Cairngorms National Park.
Despite its position in the far north of Scotland, Inverness can
actually be reached quite easily from almost anywhere in the UK. For
those travelling by car, the roads from the south are easy to navigate
and Inverness is well signposted when you reach Scotland. If you don`t
fancy a long drive then the rail links are excellent and offer a
convenient way to reach the Highlands. If you book in advance you can
take advantage of early bird fares and really get a great value seat.
The journey up the east coast in particular takes in some spectacular
scenery once you cross over the Scottish border.
If you are short of time then you should consider taking advantage of
one of the many low cost flight routes to Inverness. Flybe, Easyjet and
BMI provide low cost routes to Inverness. Scheduled flights operate
directly into Inverness from London Gatwick, London Luton, Belfast City,
Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Jersey, Manchester, Southampton and East
Midlands. If you wish to also spend a few days in Scotland's capital you
can also take an onward flight to Inverness from Edinburgh Airport. Some
of the most popular flight routes into Inverness come from London, both
Gatwick and Luton airports, and rapidly transport business and leisure
travellers alike into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. These routes
take only one hour forty minutes flight time and whisk you from the
bustling city of London to the tranquillity of the Highlands in less
time than it takes to get across London!
The best time to visit Inverness is in the summer months of June to
September when the days are long, with virtually twenty four hours of
daylight. There is of course no guarantee of good weather but if you are
lucky, you will see some sunshine and can really take advantage of the
abundance of outdoor activities available. Visitors should be aware of
the Scottish midges that can really make a nuisance of themselves in the
countryside, especially near to water. Take plenty of insect repellent
and a good sense of humour if you plan to venture into the hills.
The beauty of Inverness and the surrounding area is that there is such a
wide range of accommodation options. From extremely low cost youth
hostels in the city and camping sites in the stunning national parks and
countryside to upmarket hotels on the river in the heart of Inverness
city, there will be something to suit your budget. If you plan to come
in the summer months it is a good idea to book ahead to ensure you get
the best price and are not left stranded when you arrive. Whatever you
are looking for, you are sure to find it in Scotland's beautiful
Highland capital and you can travel home from
Inverness to Gatwick or elsewhere in the UK, feeling like you have
been to a different world
